Seismic strengthening and seismic improvement of timber structures
نویسندگان
چکیده
In European seismic areas timber structures are found as building frames, in combination with masonry infills, in bridges, but most frequently in roof structures and floor slabs of traditional buildings. Seismic strengthening of existing structures should provide a well-defined and simple path to seismic forces, maintain timber members elastic, and develop as much as possible the post-elastic behaviour of joints. Provisions must be adopted to avoid sudden loss of capacity and brittle failure, and to foster ductility. Different criteria for seismic strengthening of floor slabs and of carpentry joints are presented. 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Exploring the Efficiency of Dampers for Repair and Strengthening of Existing Buildings
In this paper, seismic behavior of the existing buildings equipped by friction dampers is studied. Seismic performance of6-story, 9-story and 12-story steel buildings with damper and without damper were studied. The finite element modeling technique (SAP2000 Software) is used for analysis. Time History analyzing was done to achieve this purpose. For nonlinear dynamic analysis, the responses of ...
متن کاملDetermination of Yield Point and Ductility of Timber Assemblies: in Search for a Harmonised Approach
Knowledge of the yield point and ductility of a structure is important in seismic design. The yield point of an assembly is defined as a point where it begins to plastically deform, while ductility describes its ability to yield without substantial reduction in strength. These parameters can be determined from the analysis of the load-deformation curves resulting from destructive tests. To date...
متن کاملNonlinear Dynamic Analyses of Novel Timber-steel Hybrid System
Although the benefits of using timber in midand high-rise construction are undisputed, there are perceived shortcomings with respect to the ductility needed to provide seismic resistance and a corresponding lack of appropriate design guidance. Overcoming these perceived shortcomings will allow timber, and its wood product derivatives, to further expand into the multi-storey construction sector,...
متن کاملImprovement of Iranian Seismic Design Code Considering the Near-Fault Effects
Characteristics of ground motions close to the earthquake source can be considerably different from those of far-field motions which should be considered in design process of structures. The current study aimed to present new design response spectra for Iranian seismic design code taking into account the near-fault effects. For this purpose, a new attenuation relation based on the ground motion...
متن کاملNumerical Modelling of Timber Braced Frame Masonry Structures (Dhajji Dewari)
This paper presents numerical modeling technique for Dhajji-Dewari structures (timber-braced rubble stone masonry), and its application for the evaluation of in-plane force-deformation capacity of Dhajji wall panels of different configuration of bracings. Dhajji structures are mainly composed of vertical and horizontal timber posts and braced using diagonal bracings and horizontal studs. Wall o...
